Our young family is still in the process of forming our Christmas traditions, but there are a few events that we can count on. The best part is that Ryan has finally reached the age where he can really remember and fully participate in each one.
The Christmas season is kicked off at The Biltmore Estate. Every year on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, the Estate opens the house to its employees and their families for a Candlelight Tour and visit from Mr. and Mrs. Claus. Their Santa has to be one of the most authentic I have ever seen! They even provide age- and gender-appropriate gifts for every child (We were so, so grateful that Ryan’s gift this year was a set of musical instruments that included drums and a trumpet! Yippee!).
Mrs. Claus wisely brought bells to entertain the youngest children.
The Saturday after Thanksgiving, we head to The Farmers’ Market pick out our Christmas tree and then return home to decorate. So fun to see Ryan looking for his favorite ornaments from last year. We even strung multi-colored lights around his room, which he loved. I don’t know if we’ll ever be allowed to take them down!
Next up is the Grove Park Inn to see their Annual Gingerbread House Competition. We’ve been going with the same group of friends for three years now.
A classic depiction of brotherly love

Yep, it’s completely edible. Amazing!
Decorating Christmas cookies is one of my personal favorites. The sugar cookie recipe is my grandmother’s (BeBe, who is now 95 years old!), and I have vivid memories of her Christmas cookies over the years. She would stay up all night, elaborately decorating hundreds of cookies for friends and family. Our cookies aren’t as fancy, but we sure do have a lot of family fun.
