About a month ago, we finished up our study of the Southeastern states. We read about the Civil War, the Underground Railroad, and the life of Davy Crockett (TN). We listened to the music of John Coltrane (NC), B.B. King (MS), Louis Armstrong (LA), and Elvis Presley (TN). Thanks to YouTube, space shuttles lifted off from the Kennedy Space Center, horses raced in the Kentucky Derby, and soldiers solemnly changed the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. And if there’s anything the South knows how to do right, it’s eat!
A fancy (for us!) dinner out to Tupelo Honey Cafe to sample Fried Catfish (AR), Fried Green Tomatoes, and BBQ (AL). The kids only liked the BBQ.
Their first taste of Coca Cola (GA) went over very well!
Mississippi Mud Pie (which is not really “pie” at all but tastes
so good they can call it whatever they want)
The boiled peanuts (SC) were deemed too salty by all.
Tennessee Stack Cake (This turned out to be a lot of effort for so-so results. Sorry, TN!)
Our own state of NC’s food required a field trip…to Krispy Kreme! Please note the sacrifices I am willing to make in the name of education.
(“Is that a sockless baby in the snow?!” you ask. Yes, it is. We cannot afford full-time help to retrieve and put his socks back on every 3.5 seconds. Be assured that as of this writing, no toes have been lost to frostbite.)
It does not take a gift in the area of mathematics to realize that we are behind (waaaaay behind) in our study of the 50 states. Early on, we studied each state longer than we probably “should” have, but it’s because there are so many interesting rabbit trails to follow with each one. I love all of the learning we are doing together!
