Note: I have not forgotten Miles! He has a birthday just around the corner, so his BIG update is coming very soon!
Caleb turns 3!
Caleb turned 3 in mid-February, and we celebrated with a Rescue Bots-themed party.
A video made when he saw his cake for the first time can be found here.
Caleb’s love of animals was a huge factor in our decision to go ahead and add Cooper to our family. He will literally grow up with Cooper and, from the beginning, Cooper treated Caleb differently than the other kids. I can only assume that Cooper sensed Caleb’s smaller size, and he approached for kisses rather than tackle play. Even now, Cooper gets the most excited when he sees Caleb first thing in the morning.
Caleb discovered the vent this winter and frequently fought over the hot air
with this fellow cold-natured brother!
Caleb’s likes
You already know he loves real animals….
I overheard Caleb telling Gravy, “I am so glad you are here!”
Turns out he is equally smitten with pretend animals, too!
Three months later and he still asks regularly about the Easter Bunny.
Other favorites at the moment:
TV Shows: Rescue Bots, PJ Masks
Books: Anything about construction equipment!
Activities: Play Doh (He can play for hours!); Wikki Stix; playing dress up/ pretend play with Abby; anything outdoors but especially swinging and “riding” his bike
Caleb’s dislikes
Caleb’s major dislikes are: using the potty and eating most food! The adults in Caleb’s life have worked really, really hard at teaching him to use the potty. As you might have guessed, our effort cannot make up for the serious lack of interest on his part. It’s a Battle of the Wills at this point, but we will win! (I hope.)
Food has been and continues to be a source of stress for Caleb. We’ve gone down some rabbit trails (allergies, acid reflux, oral sensitivities, sensory issues, etc.) to try and pinpoint the reasons behind his aversion to eating. It’s probably a bit of all of the above. Through therapy this spring, we did make some improvements and added a few foods to his limited diet. This will likely be a work in progress and growth in his ability to communicate feelings should help.
In the meantime, I supplement with a high calorie formula once a day to ensure he maintains his (low) weight and that his developing brain gets the nutrients it needs. All the professionals we have consulted tell us that pressuring him in this area will backfire. Our experience has certainly confirmed that if he senses we really want him to try even a bite of food, the entire meal comes to a screeching halt. Time and patience have a better chance of resulting in a healthy relationship with food later in life.
The joy of 3
Paul and I say to each other all the time how cute the age of 3 is. It is definitely peak adorableness! The sweet little voice, the imitation of his siblings, his delight in the silly, and exploding vocabulary bring us joy daily.
