During the first week of August, we were invited to join our dear friends the Breedloves and two other Asheville families at the Breedloves’ family vacation home on the coast of North Carolina. Steven’s parents purchased the house with large family gatherings in mind, so there were ample beds, lots of spaces for gathering, and a variety of activities to choose from.
The children were running around feral for most of the week, and they delighted in every minute. All of the boys even had their own bunkhouse, a space I did not enter for the entirety of our time there. Ignorance is bliss! Our children did many things for the first time, including kayaking, paddle boarding, and tubing. There were also board games, ping pong tournaments, movie nights, swimming and fishing.
And food! Lots and lots of food! We all pitched in for breakfasts,lunches, and snacks, and then each family rotated the dinner responsibilities. One dinner included grilled fish tacos with freshly caught fish from the river courtesy of Steven. Yum!
Thanks to the kids’ ages, the adults had plenty of fun, too. There was ample time for us to nap, take long walks, read, and enjoy conversations in the Adirondack chairs by the water.On the first day, Caleb became enamored with wearing a life jacket, and he was rarely seen without it for the rest of the week. Quite convenient from his parents’ point of view!
The weather was hit or miss, but no one complained. As you’ll see, it didn’t slow anybody down!
