The Olympics!

I must take a moment to mention how much our family enjoyed the Rio Olympics!  Paul and I love the Olympics, and this was the first time our children were old enough to really watch it right along with us.

Since the prime time broadcast was past their bedtimes, we set the DVR and gathered each evening during and after dinner to watch the highlights from the day before.

Olympics picnic Aug 2016Many nights we ate picnic-style while watching the highlights.  Go, Team U.S.A.!

Ryan and Miles were old enough to understand a lot about the scoring, rules of the sports, and remember the names of the major athletes.  Gymnastics was a huge favorite for Miles and Abby.  They both adored Simon Biles!  Swimming captured Ryan’s attention, and he whooped and hollered when the U.S.A. won a medal.  The surprise hit was women’s beach volleyball.  Even Miles grasped the rules quickly and followed an entire match closely.

Having the games recorded meant we could skip past all of the (many, many) commercials, avoid any controversy (seriously, Lochte?!), and stave off boredom (10 track and field heats in a row = a snooze fest for even me).

Miles and Abby did a lot of imitating as well.  All of the tumbling, jumping, and twisting had me convinced an ER visit was in our future!  Thankfully, injuries were avoided in the end, and the risk-taking has returned to normal levels since the Olympics concluded.  Abby begged for a leotard.  I initially told her it would have to wait for her birthday, but, upon finding one for $10 on Amazon, I surprised her.
