Back in January of 2021, I suggested to Paul that it might be time to update the kitchen a bit by painting the cabinets white. Eleven months later, we moved out of our downstairs to have the floors refinished, gutted the kitchen, and installed new cabinets, countertops, lighting fixtures, etc. Isn’t that how these projects always go?! We also slightly modified the layout and added much-needed pantry space. While we wouldn’t have chosen to begin the hard labor at Christmas time, the timing was out of our control as everything from the cabinets to the sink took longer to arrive than they would have pre-pandemic.
All in all, the majority of the work took about six weeks. It was a tight timeline so that the major disruption to our lives didn’t drag on for months. Having noisy workers in and out plus no access to a kitchen is an even bigger deal when you are trying to homeschool!
Here is the project from beginning to end….
Before pic (taken after demo had begun because that’s when Paul thought of it):
When Paul heard the quote on hiring someone to dismantle the old kitchen, he decided to take a week off of work and do it himself! He was able to repurpose many of the cabinets in the garage for more organized storage.
Over the last two weeks of December, the kitchen got smaller….
and smaller….
and smaller!
The kids decorated the walls behind the old cabinets. Years from now, someone will get a fun surprise!
We glamped in Paul’s brother’s largely empty house for the first week in January while the floors were refinished. It was a pleasant respite in the middle of the chaos.
The big floor reveal! It really brightened up the space.
My kitchen for around three weeks after we moved back in!
Cabinet installation begins!
The pantry! Yippee! The island and the pantry were the biggest changes we made in terms of the kitchen's layout.
Painting and pendants!
I opted for open shelving by the sink.
And a wallpaper accent wall!
The finished product! We are enjoying it so much!
