Winter birthdays

The winter months are big birthday months in our family!

Ryan turned 14!

Ryan is in many ways a typical teenager – he is eating, sleeping, and growing a lot. His sense of humor is increasingly perceptive and sarcastic. He alternates wildly between moments of impressive maturity and those of head-scratching impulsivity (which is precisely as it should be).

Ryan wanted to find a job the minute he turned 14. To his delight, he found a position working in the kitchen at a nearby assisted living facility. He only works 4-6 hours a week right now because school remains the priority. He is bursting with pride and has the goal of saving up for a car. Unbelievably, he will begin driver’s ed in the fall!

Caleb turns 6!

Caleb requested “fireworks” for his theme which proved to be the trickiest yet. The inspiration was a sparkler-type candle he had seen at another party.

It’s so fun to have a littler guy around still! He has loved kindergarten, and I have loved being his teacher. He is into all of the things you might expect – Minecraft, Star Wars, Legos, and imaginative play. Ryan is his Lego buddy, Miles incorporates Caleb into his music and video making, and Abby is the creator of elaborate, dramatic plotlines. One of the (many) benefits of homeschooling is strong sibling connections that would be harder to nurture with the age range we have in our family.

I anticipate that Caleb will learn how to read in this coming year. He’s close! He also promises that he will learn to swim when he turns 7 but not a minute before. Caleb is welcoming and even outgoing with new friends. Like our other three children, he is a prolific Asker of Questions. The questions often surprise me with their depth and seriousness.

Adults have birthdays, too!

Jonathan’s birthday is in January, mine in February, and Paul’s mom’s in March. We enjoyed our first post-pandemic, adults-only birthday party at the club in early March. This year James was in attendance, too, because he lives here now!  Yay!
